How Not to Worship

Matthew 6:1-18

Is there a wrong way to worship? I believe that there is and it is all about attitude. In this passage Jesus is instructing his hearers about how they should worship God. He addressed three of the prominent forms of Jewish piety: alms, prayer, and fasting.

In each of these three, Jesus condemns those who do those for their own reputation. These would toot their own horn, so to speak, when they gave. They would pray in public places in order to be noticed. They would make sure they looked miserable when they fasted. Their acts of worship were such to bring glory to themselves and not to God.

The object of our worship, whether public or private, is to bring God glory. He is our focus, not ourselves. If you use your worship to look more spiritual in others' eyes then you are living against what Jesus taught in this passage. We should give and pray and fast. These should lead to a closer relationship with God. The problem is when our worship is used to make us look better in other peoples' sight.
