A genealogy is not the passage which most people would rush to for encouragement or teaching. We tend to skip over them in our reading because they are not as important to us as they were to the people of Israel. This particular genealogy has much to teach us. We can learn much from what Moses has to say in Genesis 5:1-32.
There are several features of this genealogy. We see the lingering effects of sin in that each man died. There is the repetition of this fact over and over in this genealogy. We also see hope because Enoch walked with God and did not have to face death. God would reward those who follow him. We also see God's mercy in the long lives of these patriarchs. They lived long even though they still had to face death.
